Privacy policy

Last updated: May 2026

Introduction

CineCoop (“we”, “our”) is a browser extension that lets you watch movies and shows together on supported streaming websites with synchronized playback, invite links, and an optional group chat. This policy explains what information is processed when you use CineCoop, how we use it, and what choices you have.

By installing or using CineCoop, you agree to this privacy policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the extension.

Who this policy applies to

This policy applies to users of the CineCoop Chrome extension, this website, and related services (including our authentication backend). It does not replace the privacy policies of streaming platforms (Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, etc.) or Discord.

Data we collect and process

Depending on how you use CineCoop, we may process the following:

  • Watch party & sync data: play/pause state, playback position (seek), session or room identifiers, invite codes, and host settings (for example “only host controls playback”). This is exchanged between participants to keep everyone in sync.
  • Chat messages: text you send in the in-session chat, reactions, and optional GIFs you choose from search results.
  • Discord profile (optional): if you sign in for chat — Discord user ID, username, display name, and avatar URL. Sign-in is not required to join a party via invite link; it is required to read and send chat messages.
  • Optional voice & video: if you turn on the microphone or camera in a session, audio/video may be shared with other participants in that session. We do not store recordings of these streams on our servers.
  • Local preferences: settings such as chat language, sidebar visibility, and session state, stored in your browser (chrome.storage, sessionStorage, or similar).
  • Technical data: minimal information needed for the extension to work (for example HTTPS requests to our backend for OAuth, or GIF search queries sent to Tenor). We do not build advertising profiles from this data.

What we do not collect

CineCoop is designed to avoid collecting data that is not needed for watch parties. We do not intentionally collect:

  • Payment or billing information
  • Health information
  • Precise GPS or location data
  • Your general browsing history outside the streaming tab where you use CineCoop
  • The actual video file or stream from Netflix, YouTube, or other platforms

How we use your information

We use the information above only to:

  • Create, join, and manage watch parties
  • Keep playback synchronized between participants
  • Display chat, GIF search, and optional voice/video in a session
  • Authenticate optional Discord sign-in
  • Remember your preferences locally
  • Operate, maintain, and improve the extension

We do not use your data for advertising, cross-site tracking, or selling personal information.

Video synchronization

Synchronized playback uses peer-to-peer connections (PeerJS) between participants in the same session. Sync signals (play, pause, seek) are shared between browsers; CineCoop does not record, host, or redistribute the video content from streaming services.

CineCoop is not affiliated with Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, Prime Video, or other streaming platforms.

Discord sign-in & our server

If you choose Discord login, authentication is handled through our secure HTTPS backend (OAuth). We receive only the profile fields needed to show your name and avatar in chat. We do not post to Discord on your behalf without your action in the extension.

Third-party services

CineCoop relies on services that have their own privacy policies:

  • Discord — optional account sign-in for chat (Discord Privacy Policy)
  • PeerJS / WebRTC — peer-to-peer sync and optional real-time media between session members
  • Tenor (Google) — GIF search in chat; search terms and media requests may be sent to Tenor’s API (Google Privacy Policy)
  • Our hosting provider — authentication and session backend on Railway, over HTTPS
  • Streaming websites — the extension runs only on supported watch URLs; those sites process your account and viewing activity under their own terms

Browser permissions

The extension may request permissions such as:

  • storage — save preferences and session data locally
  • activeTab / tabs / scripting — inject sync and chat UI on supported streaming pages; open the Discord sign-in page in a new tab when you choose to connect
  • offscreen — support media features where required by the browser

Permissions are used only for features described in this policy and in the Chrome Web Store listing.

Data storage & retention

  • On your device: session and preference data remain in your browser until you clear extension data, end a session, or uninstall CineCoop.
  • On our servers: we keep only what is necessary to operate authentication and watch parties. We do not retain chat message history on our servers for long-term archiving; chat is primarily exchanged in real time during active sessions.
  • Logs: server logs, if any, are kept for a limited time for security and troubleshooting, then deleted or aggregated.

Sharing & sale of data

We do not sell your personal information. We share data only with the third parties listed above, strictly to provide the service, or when required by law.

Security

We use HTTPS for server communication and aim to limit processing to what is necessary. No method of transmission over the Internet is 100% secure. Do not share passwords, financial details, or other sensitive personal information in party chat.

Your rights & choices

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to:

  • Access or receive a copy of personal data we hold about you
  • Request correction or deletion of your data
  • Object to or restrict certain processing
  • Withdraw Discord authorization (via Discord account settings or by logging out in CineCoop)
  • Stop using the extension and clear browser/extension storage at any time

To exercise these rights, contact us at cinecoopsupp@proton.me. We will respond within a reasonable time.

Children

CineCoop is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it.

International users

Our services may be operated from the European Union or other locations. If you use CineCoop from outside your home country, your information may be processed in jurisdictions with different data protection laws.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of CineCoop after an update means you accept the revised policy. For material changes, we may also update the Chrome Web Store listing or this page.
